An embedding of a graph into a surface is called polyhedral if its dual has no multiple edges or loops. A conjecture of Grunbaum, presented in 1968, states that each 3-regular graph with a polyhedral embedding into an orientable surface has a 3-edge-coloring. With respect to the result of Tait, it aims to generalize the four color theorem for any orientable surface. We present a negative solution to this conjecture, showing that for each orientable surface of genus at least 5, there exists a 3-regular non 3-edge-colorable graph with a polyhedral embedding into the surface.
In consequence, for instance when illustrating education theory with examples from the classroom, they may seldom make use of examples from mathematics but instead choose examples from other curricular areas of which they have greater experience. There is need for close cooperation between education tutors and mathematics tutors so that education theory can be seen by mathematics students to be firmly grounded on practice in schools and in this way to make a valid contribution to their initial training. 655 It is very difficult to quantify the salaries which can be earned by mathematics graduates who do not enter teaching or to generalise about their very varied conditions of employment.

Local Area Agreement (LAA)
Mr EL Basire, our Assistant Secretary, Miss E Kirszberg and Mr RW Le Cheminant, in addition to their other duties, have given much personal help to members of the Committee. The failures in arithmetic are mainly due to the scarcity of good teachers of it. In the light of present day criticism of standards, it is interesting to assemble a collection of quotations from documents of various kinds, some of which date back to the last century, which draw attention to the allegedly poor mathematical standards of the day. We content ourselves with examples from approximately a century, a half century and a quarter century ago. We have considered the implications of these announcements so far as mathematics is concerned.
In some cases, P can be represented in a simpler way as the projection of some polyhedron Q in a higher-dimensional space, where often Q is defined by a much smaller system of constraints than P. In this talk we discuss techniques to obtain extended formulations for combinatorial optimization problems, and cases where extended formulations prove useful. In this work we present a PTAS for the highway bookkeeping for startups problem, hence closing the complexity status of the problem. Our result is based on a novel randomized dissection approach, which has some points in common with Arora’s quadtree dissection for Euclidean network design [Arora-’98]. The basic idea is enclosing the highway in a bounding path, such that both the size of the bounding path and the position of the highway in it are random variables.

Teaching of younger pupils in comprehensive schools
630 It was thought likely that less well qualified teachers might be used mainly with younger pupils. The hypothesis was examined in respect of the teaching of pupils up to the age of 16 in comprehensive schools with an entry age of 11 or 12; the full outcome is in Appendix 1, Table 19. Some confirmation of the hypothesis was found, but to a lesser extent than might have been expected. In the first year, 47 per cent of mathematics teaching was in ‚unsuitable‘ hands; in the fifth year the figure was 37 per cent.
